design graphics

Benefits of studying Design Graphics

The Design Graphics course will be of interest to a wide range of students, both boys and girls. It will develop, within students, an understanding of the techniques involved in the design fields,

engineering, architecture and the trades, as well as general presentation skills used throughout the world of work. Students will be introduced to a variety of skills incorporating manual graphic and technical drawing techniques along with the use of

computer based programs, similar to those used in the design industries.

Areas of Study

The course is made up of four areas of study outlined below, however much of the work will be integrated within topics of study.

Illustration Techniques:

Students will be introduced to a variety of rendering techniques, including colour pencil and marker rendering, used within the design field to illustrate and present product ideas. Presentation skills will look into the use of, and the interaction

between, colour as well as layout techniques and the integration of graphic images and text.

Computer Aided Graphics (CAG):

With the increasing use of computer based systems in design and engineering fields it is important that students experience the techniques used to generate graphic images using CAG systems. Students will be involved in image manipulation and computer rendering techniques within both vector and bitmap based graphics. Presentation skills will continue to be developed through the use of layout and text within page and poster layout.

Technical Graphics:

Traditional manual graphic techniques are still used extensively within design, engineering and architecture and it is important students are introduced to the skills developed through the use of the drawing board. The techniques employed within the development of 2D orthographic and pictorial drawing will be developed along with the manual skills used within the Illustration element of the course.

Computer Aided Drawing (CAD):

Once basic drawing skills have been developed within the Technical Graphics element of the course, students will be introduced to Computer Aided Drawing techniques employed in the design, engineering and architectural industries. Initially work covered will concentrate on 2D orthographic work, however skills will develop to include 3D modelling techniques, similar to those employed within the computer animation fields.

Progression:

Student following the above course will develop skills to enable them to progress to courses offered at Standard Grade and Intermediate level in Graphic Communication and Product Design.
