Benefits of studying Engineering
This course will look at all aspects of engineering in motor sports and the exciting possibilities in the world of engineering. The overall purpose of technological education should be to develop technological capability, that is; the understanding of appropriate concepts and processes; the ability to apply knowledge and skills by thinking and acting confidently, imaginatively, creatively and with sensitivity; the ability to evaluate technological activities, artefacts and systems critically and constructively.
The course will be primarily concerned with the understanding of basic engineering principles and concepts and how these are used in motorsports to design and build a successful racing machine. There may be the opportunity to enter an engineering competition as part of the coursework. We are hoping to involve outside speakers to relate their own experiences in motorsports.
Course Content
We will be looking at structures and how these are important in the design of chassis, we will be looking at methods of powering vehicles- internal combustion engines, suspension and how this must be designed, involving material selections, geometries and production processes.
The area of aerodynamics will also be looked at and how this is not only important in racing but also in standard vehicles to reduce fuel consumption.
Mechanisms and gears will be covered when looking at transmission and how all of these components can come together as a whole system to produce a winning machine.
Assessment
The course will be assessed to ensure progression in learning is occurring. The students will be formally assessed at the end of each unit and the end of the course.
Progression
Pupils following this course will have an understanding of, and be equipped to take Technological Studies at Standard Grade and possible progression to Higher Grade.
The course will provide a good grounding for students wishing to enter a career in any of the specialist fields of engineering.
