Music Department News

I am very pleased to report that the new academic year has started on a high after great results from Dalbeattie High School music students sitting their recent Standard Grade, Higher and Advanced Higher SQA examinations. Well done to all of you.

Last years Standard Grade Music class put on an evening performance from their solo and group repertoire with the Standard Grade Drama class to help raise funds for two of our pupils who got places at the National Youth Theatre of Scotland’s Summer School. A very impressive evening of the arts was delivered in our assembly hall.

Dalbeattie High School Music Department was invited to be the musical entertainment at the Stewartry Celebration of Achievement Awards held at Threave Gardens. This was a great platform for two of our Advanced Higher Music students to perform. Mhairi Valentine rounded off the first half with a fabulous ‘jazzy’ rendition of ‘Survivor’ and Rory McLatchie moved some of the audience to tears with his outstanding performance of ‘Bring Him Home’ from the musical Les Miserables. This was received with a standing ovation from the crowd. All feedback was extremely positive and both said they had a great experience and would welcome more performance opportunities like this. Both student got an A at Higher Music and won first place in their event at the Dumfries Music Festival.  Mhairi and Rory are both considering continuing to study Music in Higher Education.

Edinburgh Playhouse had some very special guests on the evening of Tuesday 6th September … yes that’s right a coach load of S2 – S6 Dalbeattie High students ventured up after school for an evening of musical brilliance - the hit West end musical ‘Legally Blond’ -  leaving with the ‘feel good factor’. A very successful trip indeed. I am in the middle of making plans for our next musical adventure to the Playhouse to see ‘We Will Rock You’ on the 29th November. It will be open to S2 – S6 and will cost £33.00, which will include coach and ticket price. I have heard several great reviews about this show and I am sure this will appeal to many of our students.

Coming up to Christmas We have booked tickets for S1 to go to the pantomime at DGOne on the 20th December for a morning performance of Beauty and the Beast…Oh no I haven’t . . . Oh yes I have!!! Expect a letter soon.
