NEWS FROM THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES

This term has been busy, with a lot of promising initiatives being introduced and a host of important events taken part. We have seen the introduction of the new Dalbeattie High School Blazers into the sixth year. This is not compulsory uniform but has had a good reception from the lower year groups. The blazers have the school crest embroidered on and have a pale blue braiding to complement the senior school tie.

We have also attempted to fulfil the needs of students by providing social areas. Permission for the assembly hall to be used by the third and fourth year groups as a social area was given after the October break. A rota was established for tidying up the hall and was divided per house group a week and days spilt into the year groups. Although the uptake wasn’t great, we are hoping this will become more popular as the year progresses.

Our newest project has been our ‘For Sale Board’ which is just across from Mrs Bain’s Office. This will give pupils the opportunity to sell any old possessions in the safe environment of the school. Only appropriate items are to be sold and permission from parents/carers is sought first. With the help of Mrs Bain, we will monitor this closely.

Communications between pupil council members has been improved, with an ICT “Glow group” established

on the in house computer system. This allows all pupil council members access to an electronic folder with all pupil council documents.

Representatives of the pupil council were chose to visit Wallace Hall Academy and Moffat School - both newly built schools - to see the modern facilities. The pupils composed a document of the advantages and disadvantages of both schools and also included what they wished to be in our new school. The feedback was that the pupils liked the idea of both secondary and primary schools being on the same site as this allows greater access of resources to younger pupils. The representatives took into account every detail – including the bad positioning of gas taps in the science labs! They also raised how both schools had great sporting facilities: something they would like to see in a new school build. The full document including the pupils’ thoughts is displayed on the pupil council notice board. This is to be taken to the next community council meeting on Monday the 12th December in the town hall which we will attend representing the School.

We also participated in the Remembrance Day Service held in Dalbeattie Parish Church and the laying of the wreaths in Colliston Park. The wreath was laid by the oldest girl, Rachael White, and the youngest boy Charlie Blackwood, and followed by ourselves. This was the first ‘outing’ for our new blazers which were greeted with a good reception from everyone.

We are also working closely with the S6 Social and Charities committee finding ways of fundraising and

providing further opportunities for the whole student body. We are busily preparing for out end of term activities including our Junior and Senior School Dances and our End of Term Service and Afternoon Activity – Dalbeattie’s Got Talent!!.
