product design (S3)
What is Product Design?
Product design is about the creation of new items that people will buy. It includes appearance and function, and needs the balance of science and art for its success.
Product Design is the process that starts with an initial idea or thought that is developed into a final, detailed design that is ready to be manufactured and sold.
Benefits of studying Product Design
Product Design is relevant to every person. We all use products in our everyday life so you would be surprised how much you already know about what makes a good
product.
This class will introduce students to a number of new skills and techniques that are necessary to good design. Qualifications in Product Design lead to many opportunities in further education and in industry. Over the last five years individuals trained in product design have established many of the most successful new creative businesses in the UK.
Areas of study
The course will follow the 6 main steps of the design process. Students will be asked to design a product from start to finish and they will develop their design through each of the 6 steps.
1. Design Brief
Students will explore where the ideas for new designs come from and how they would work with a commercial client to produce a new product.
2. Design Specification
Students will examine the design brief and use research and investigation techniques to further their understanding of what it is they have to design.
3. Concept Design
Using a variety of fun idea generation techniques pupils will begin to design their own product using a number of sketching and rendering techniques including pencil,
marker pen and airbrush.
4. Detail Design
Students will then move onto the computers and using specialised Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) software they will develop 3 dimensional models of their design ideas.
5. Manufacture and Testing
Pupils will also make an a physical model of their design in the workshop using various tools and processes that they can test and evaluate.
6. Sales
Students will consider how products are sold to the consumer and will use Illustration and Presentation techniques to produce high quality images of their design.
Progression
Students following the above course will develop the skills and techniques to enable them to progress onto courses at Intermediate 2 level in Product Design.
